The Duration of Union Membership : an Empirical Study
نویسنده
چکیده
Thanks to direct access to union databanks, this paper can answer two new questions in Industrial Relations: how long union membership lasts and what are the determinants of its duration. This also allows to conceptualize union membership as a much more dynamic phenomenon than in previous studies, where it was considered a static situation whose causes or e¤ects were to be investigated. Survival analysis applied to a sample of 48705 workers highlights that union membership duration is a positive, though declining, function of age. Furthermore, women, exibleworkers, foreign ones and those working in cities tend to show less attachment to union membership than the other workers.

An Empirical Comparison between Grade of Membership and Principal Component Analysis
t is the purpose of this paper to contribute to the discussion initiated byWachter about the parallelism between principal component (PC) and atypological grade of membership (GoM) analysis. The author testedempirically the close relationship between both analysis in a lowdimensional framework comprising up to nine dichotomous variables and twotypologies. Our contribution to the subject is also...
متن کاملGeneral definitions for the union and intersection of ordered fuzzy multisets
Since its original formulation, the theory of fuzzy sets has spawned a number of extensions where the role of membership values in the real unit interval $[0, 1]$ is handed over to more complex mathematical entities. Amongst the many existing extensions, two similar ones, the fuzzy multisets and the hesitant fuzzy sets, rely on collections of several distinct values to represent fuzzy membershi...
متن کاملA Survival Analysis Approach to the Duration of Union Membership in Italy
Thanks to direct access to union databases, this paper applies survival analysis to a sample of 47,637 Italian workers trying to explain the determinants of the duration of union membership. The results show that union membership duration is a positive, though declining, function of age. Furthermore, women, flexible workers, foreign ones and those working in cities tend to show less attachment ...
متن کاملThe Union Membership Wage-Premium Puzzle: Is there a Free Rider Problem?
Economists have, at least since Olson (1965), suggested that there is a free rider problem associated with labour union membership. The reason is that union-set wages are available to all workers covered by unions irrespective of whether or not they are union members, and given that there are costs to membership – workers will only join if they are coerced or offered incentive excludable goods....
متن کاملFactors of Convergence and Divergence in Union Membership
This paper considers to what extent union decline in Britain has been characterised by convergence or divergence in union membership rates for people with different personal and job characteristics. It compares data on individual union membership in 1975, from a period when union membership was high and growing, to data in 2001 data when it is low and has been falling for over twenty years. Som...
